Chapter 19

“I’m sorry,” I repeated, once I settled in the driver’s seat and closed the door. “Like I said, you don’t have to answer any questions if you don’t want to. I’m doing this–”

“Yeah, I get it.” Sarah leaned her head against the window. “You want to know about the drama, like the rest of the town. I understand.”

“No, that’s not it at all. I want to find out who killed Misty.”

Sarah lifted her head and looked at me.

“I work at Hale Hall and because Misty’s body was found on the property, that makes people believe a whole variety of things about what happened to her. I want to make sure that the hall’s reputation isn’t tarnished, so that’s why I’m pretty adamant about finding her killer.”

“That’s nice of you,” she whispered. She slipped off her sunglasses to reveal bloodshot, puffy eyes. “I wouldn’t have it in me to investigate someone’s murder like that. For one, I don’t have the time. I also don’t have enough of an interest in anyone to invest my time in them like that.”

I leaned back in my seat.

“I hate him,” she admitted quietly. Her eyes glazed over. “I really do.”

“He came to the sheriff’s office and asked for protection from you, as well as a restraining order.”

“He’s so dramatic,” she mumbled. “He’s incredibly lucky. I don't mean what I say, half the time. He would have been in big trouble otherwise.”

“Do you want to hurt him?”

“No. I don’t want to be the one to do it, but if someone else wanted to give him a punch or two on my behalf, I wouldn’t stop them. That’s why it’s a shame that those men held Thaddeus back from giving Darnell a thrashing. I would have paid good money to see that.”

“Do you mean that?”

“Absolutely. With all my heart. I can’t wait until this divorce is over, and I get most of his properties. I have proof of his adultery, so I’m sure the court will rule in my favor.”

“When did you find out about the affair?” I wondered how much I could ask about, without pushing a boundary too far. “Was it before or after Misty got killed?”

“Weeks before.”

My eyes widened. Sarah smiled.

“I see why you’re asking. Do you think I killed her?”

“Darnell made you out to be insane at the sheriff’s office, so I’m not sure what to think.”

“Of course that idiot would act like that,” she retorted. “He always starts acting crazy when he wants to shift the blame off of himself. He feels guilty. He knows what he did was wrong, but he doesn’t want to face the consequences for anything. I expected nothing less from Darnell.”

“He said once you found out about the affair, you started acting crazy.”

Sarah rolled her eyes.

“Do you want to know how I found out? It was the most humiliating thing I have ever experienced. We were at a work gathering and one of his colleagues pulled me off to the side. They said that they walked in on Darnell and Misty making out in the coffee room.
